Data center and cryptocurrency mining zoning text amendment
Text amendment to Ordinance 21653 limiting data centers to industrial districts (I, J, K), adding data center development standards (250-ft building setback from residential uses and districts, standby generators 300 ft away and acoustically screened, rooftop cooling behind barriers 1.5x equipment height, 50-ft buffer yard, evergreen tree row, lighting rules extended to residential uses, parking at 1 space per 4 employees), and defining and prohibiting cryptocurrency mining. Presented by Assistant City Manager Jessica McEachern. About 22 public speakers opposed or asked for stronger rules, including 1-mile setbacks, heavy-industrial-only zoning and a moratorium. Chair Raines suggested 500-ft setbacks, 550-ft generator setbacks and J/K only; Robinson suggested 600 ft. Motion to deny carried 7-4. Nays on the denial motion: Raines, Mayo, Welch and Pierce. Recommendation of denial goes to City Council on August 11.
