Recommendation to acquire Wekiva Trail (Segments 1 and 5) rail corridor
Committee recommended the Board of County Commissioners acquire the Wekiva Trail, an 11-mile, ~110-acre CSX/Florida Central Railroad corridor running from Sorrento to Tavares (Segment 1 Sorrento-Mount Dora, Segment 5 Mount Dora-Tavares). Anticipated purchase price $27 million; $3.5 million requested from Florida Communities Trust leaving a $23.5 million gap. Option contract held by Trust for Public Land (TPL) through March 2028. Motion also suggested (not conditioned) that BCC pursue matching funds (TDT, MPO) and that it be considered at the August 11, 2026 board meeting.
